2018 has started strongly with loss prevention surveys throughout Europe. It is pleasing to see more European fleets engaging in loss prevention, sometimes for their own account rather than being part of an insurance programme. Modern vessels are no more reliable particularly when it comes to four stroke medium speed engines. Crankshaft damages remain our greatest area of loss prevention activity, followed by turbochargers, fires and then navigation related incidents. Nearly all are preventable once they have been studied and the reasons found.
