During 2020 we experienced a big reduction in our survey activities due to travel restrictions. Our turnover was reduced by half. We offered online remote surveys where these were possible. These mainly involve the office management audit, ( C survey ). These have proven to be reasonably successful. We have yet to find an effective means of carrying out a remote vessel survey.
In terms of numbers, we carried out 22 remote surveys during 2020 and surprisingly, we managed 72 vessel surveys.
The vessel surveys were mainly ferries, fishing vessels and yachts, but included all types of vessel, and for the first time in our existence we surveyed a chain ferry.
The vessel surveys were mostly carried out in the UK and Europe within the travel restrictions, although we did manage a trip to Mexico in November to see a cruise ship, and this was surprisingly easy.
Just as travel restrictions were easing up at the end of 2020, the country’s borders have closed again and 2021 looks like being another difficult year for our surveyors who, if they are not traveling they are not earning.
We thank our clients for their continued support at this difficult time and we will continue to do our best with online remote surveys, particularly where these apply to the shore based operations.
