David Jones surveyed an unusual ship with a gondola. This particular vessel is intended for surveying the sea at great depths, with a large laboratory on board that is now being converted into the operation centre for the sea beam equipment. The vessel has powerful transducers which are contained within a pod. This pod is slung underneath the hull and it is called the "gondola". The addition beneath the keel of the gondola increases the stability. See the picture.

Also the bridge equipment was new and impressive. See the picture of Brand new Kelvin Hughes radar.
